Xmas 7: Victoria 2: James, Bug Zoo, Butterfly Gardens, and Butchart Gardens

We woke up in the morning and were delighted to see that it was predicted to be sunny throughout the day.  James was back on the window sill before long.

We arrived at the bug zoo, only a few blocks away, right near opening time.  The attendant was nice enough to give us a tour of the place, while taking out a few of the critters.  It was on the small side, but was filled with interesting creatures.

After a short break, we took the bus an hour northward, to the Butterfly Gardens.  This was a much smaller variation of what we saw at the Bloedel Conservatory, except with mostly butterflies.  While the butterflies were great, they also had some birds, including two flamingos, which we felt was inhumane due to how small the space was.  This should have been exclusively butterfly.  There were turtles as well.

Just a few minutes by bus and we were at the much talked about Butchart Gardens.  The price to get in was very high, though I noted that for children it was only $3.  Prices are higher at this time of the year because they light up the place for the holidays.

Dogs were allowed, which was wonderful, and we saw many people with them.  The Japanese garden area was nice, but we've seen many this trip, so the allure had faded.  The rest of the gardens weren't impressive to me.  It was smaller than I expected, and with nothing in bloom, it was quite unspectacular.  Although there were three area with nice lighting, the rest of the park was sparsely decorated.  It made me recall the gardens I took Miles to in Japan in November of 2017.  They had lit up the gardens and done a much, much more thorough and creative job.  This was a letdown in comparison.

While walking a few blocks from our bus stop to the hotel, we noticed that there were quite a few homeless.  Not nearly as many as in Vancouver, but still enough to be disturbing.

Tomorrow, we head back to Vancouver to spend a few hours in town before we board our flights home.
