Xmas 8: Back to Vancouver: The origin story. Battlestar Galactica. And the final day.

Why Vancouver?  Well, Vancouver came onto my radar when I found out that my favorite show, Battlestar Galactica, was filmed there.  The wilderness shots, in particular, I found beautiful.  Therefore, I became interested in visiting.  When the opportunity arose, I booked a short visit here.

The night before we left San Francisco for Vancouver, Stephanie was looking over the hotspots that I had picked out and asked if I had any preferences.  I said that I didn't really care, and that I had only picked the spot because I figured that it was beautiful, because the scenes in Battlestar were beautiful.  It was at that moment that it dawned on me...  Why not check to see if any of the scenes were filmed in the actual city!

I found two handy sites to guide me, and I went on my way.  The locations included the Waterfall Building, Simon Fraser university, the Bloedel Conservatory, the Alibi Room, the Vancouver Public Library, and the Orpheum.  The Orpheum was used throughout the series as the Opera House.

In the end, I was unable to get inside the Orpheum.  In the summer months there are free tours.  For the week that we stayed in the area, it was only open for one performance.  The show was sold out.  We tried the box office, but only one ticket was left, for $140.  I also tried emailing the theater, and they responded back by asking what show I was interested in, and ignored the part where I asked if there was any chance that I could get a quick peak on the Saturday that we returned.  I emailed them back, again asking, and to this, they never responded.

The alibi room was a particular treat because a few scenes were filmed there and it is a restaurant.  We got to eat on a former set!

In any case, here are my pictures and some of the corresponding scenes from the show.

The Assassin's Creed character showed up here as well.

I thank those sites very much.  They made our trip to Vancouver very exciting for me.

On the last day, we woke up to a final visit from James.

We took the bus, ferry, and bus to reach Vancouver airport.  I took some quick pictures on the top deck of the ferry.  At the airport, we still had 10 hours until our flight.  We used a baggage service to hold our bags and took the metro into Vancouver to explore Gastown.

I originally had interest in staying in Gastown, but the surrounding areas are known for prostitution and drug dealing, so I changed my mind.  That being said, it was highly recommended for visiting during the day.  We were able to see North Vancouver while walking along.  Towards the end, we visited CRAB park, which offered the views posted at the bottom of the page.

We browsed the shops, particularly enjoying the aboriginal art galleries.  The art was beautiful, but prices began in the hundreds and went up into the tens of thousands.  We made quick stops at the steam clock that Gastown is known for, as well as the statue of "Gassy" Jack, from whom the town was named after.

We took the 11:30 PM flight home, which stopped midway at Dallas, and arrived at nearly 11:00 AM EST.
