Taiwan 2.3: The puppy and the zoo

Originally I had planned to bring Miles to the Taipei Zoo on our first full day.  The forecast, however, showed cloudiness and rain, so I postponed it til Saturday, where it showed "sunny and beautiful."  Saturday morning looked anything but.  It had a sky full of clouds.

We began the day by traveling to Andrew's apartment to meet his three month old Chow Chow puppy.  It was absolutely adorable.  Miles had a ball petting him.  Andrew showed Miles his sound studio and we got to hang out on his top floor balcony.

The weather report still showed that it would become sunny soon, so we left for the zoo.  The entrance fee was only two dollars, and when we entered, we were given tickets for a ten minute window to see the pandas.  There was a Mcdonalds right at the front of the park, which was disheartening.

Regarding the weather, well, it never cleared up so we made the best of it.  The park is gargantuan and we only ended up seeing a tiny fraction of it.  We saw some pandas hungrily eating the flora.  The strange thing was that there were two pandas right outside the ticketed area.  When we went inside the ticketed area, it was inside a building and the lighting was very poor.  The viewing area outside was much better!

We were hungry, so we ended up eating in the panda themed cafe on the top floor of the panda ticketed area.  As we were walking on to the next area of the park, Miles pointed to a panda hanging out on top of a wooden jungle gym, with his head hanging off the side.  Viewing it from a distance, I declared that it was a fake panda, as I found it unlikely that a real panda would be in such a position.  Plus, it wasn't moving.

After going through the next area, it began to rain, so we packed up our camera gear and walked out of the park.  On the way, Miles spotted that the fake panda was gone.  Apparently, it was real.  Next time I need to listen to Miles!  We really enjoyed the park and plan to go back and revisit, to see the areas that we missed, when we return to Taipei later in the trip.

We went back to the hotel room for the night.  Tomorrow we travel to the Taroko Gorge National Park.
